‘Proven bloodlines are rewarded at the Zangersheide auctions’
Breeding ‘HB‘’ stands for Helsen Benny, a retired engineer with Tessenderlo Chemie who has been into breeding for 40 years. And with success, for Helsen is no one less than the breeder of O de Pomme with whom Stanny Van Paesschen jumped the 2004 Olympic Games of Athens and won the World Cup of Verona with. The story of Tiebreaker HB Z goes back to that line. Tiebreaker is a Taloubet Z son out of Kissbreaker (Heartbreaker x Jus De Pomme). ‘Kissbreaker is a daughter of W De Pomme and a granddaughter of Melvina. Her dam Derdwina (Wendekreis x Alcanar xx) is also the dam of O de Pomme. ‘I purchased Derdwina from a trader when I was still a regional rider. She proved to be a good dam because along with O de Pomme she also produced the full sister V de Pomme, who jumped at 1.60m level too. In combination with Heartbreaker the W de Pomme offspring include for example the 1.50m jumping Goldbreaker, the Z-approved stallion Lincoln and the BWP Champion stallion Faldiano. Elco HB Z, an Elvis Ter Putte son out of W de Pomme, finished in 4th place at the Z-Festival two years ago.
These are just a few references that showcase the proven bloodlines of HB. In spite of the successes in the sport, Benny Helsen is as down-to-earth as ever: ‘Before, I used to keep the foals on to give them their education and sold them after that. These days I’m more inclined to sell them as foals and via the Zangersheide auctions I reap the rewards of the proven bloodlines. Luckily, I never go on a holiday and have always invested my vacation allowances in the horses. Since I’m with Zangersheide I make a profit. Last year I also chose Taloubet Z and paired him to W de Pomme (Talou HB Z). Taloubet Z is very much to my liking, all you need to do is look at his roll of honour, so this year again I opted for that stallion. By the way, this is my only foal this year. The combination Taloubet Z x Heartbreaker quite evidently went down well at the presentation. I’m hoping for another good return in September’, Benny ‘HB’ Helsen smiles.
